I have an affinity for monsters–not the super scary types, but the cute, dorky, stuffed, or funny kind. In the last two years, I curtailed my collection of monsters by a significant margin, but it is October–Halloween month where monsters appear at every turn, or as is the case with our family, in the mail.
I am a word doodler, which basically means I can’t draw worth a hoot, but I can make dots, dashes, and bubble letters like a high school cheerleader hopped-up on Frappuccinos. Couple that with a penchant for fonts, paper, and an attraction to monsters, and it is fair to say Laurence King Publishing found a strong match to review Linda Scott’s My Monster Bubble Writer Book.
In case there is any confusion, this activity book “is all about monsters, bubble writing, and drawing–three of the best things in the world!”
So, if monsters make you or your little ones squeamish, and you do not think they will serve to inspire your children to write, draw, and create monstrously funny alphabets and illustrations (while simultaneously reviewing verbs, nouns, and adjectives *SHHHH*)–you may want to stop reading.
Or do yourself a favor and keep reading–this monster-inspired book is far from creepy. In fact, the basis of the book is about communicating with words: letters, notes, games, riddles, messages, memos, etc…
The “My Monster Bubble Writer Book” begins with a quick introduction to hand-drawing bubble letters using the reader’s name.
Starting with the Basic Outline, moving on to Freehand, and then, encouraging the newbie bubble writer to go wild, this book offers endless opportunities for practicing and developing one’s own bubble letters.
Between the bubble writing pages are other activities, like using suggested illustrations to turn shapes into one’s own monsters.
Ever heard of Sock Letters?
See if you can write your name with Sock Letters before the Sock Monster has a chance to eat one of them.
What? You didn’t know Sock Monsters eat socks one at a time?
In two of my homescool co-op writing classes students illustrate nouns, verbs and adjectives using the word to demonstrate its meaning. It makes for a great lesson about visualizing words and their meanings.
With 300 illustrations printed across 144 pages, “My Monster Bubble Writer Book” offers parents and teachers a monster-rifically awesome tool to supplement learning in a wacky, holiday-centric manner.
Personally, I think Monsters are appropriate year-round; well except for zombies–they’re just too creepy for me.
As a side note: I needed this book when I was in 3rd grade. Maybe defining my monsters in this way would have made bedtime easier. Am I the only one who ran and jumped into my bed from as far away as possible? Anyone else keep their sheets tucked tight around their body to keep the monsters out?
