Community Question: Homeschool High School Hours

Community Question is a category inspired by you. Here and there readers write in with questions that are better served by the varied, experiential knowledge of those who read and contribute in the comments. Please respond to this post in the comments, but if you have a question for the community email it to Heather.

The following question is from Kathleen K.

“We have been homeschooling forever. Considering my oldest is in 10th grade and had k4 and k5…that would be 12 years and counting. The early days were so easy. An hour or two at the most. Now he is spending 6-8 hours doing schoolwork and complaining about every minute over 5 hours. He’s doing a typical load: History, English II (includes grammar, composition, and literature), Chemistry, Advanced Algebra/PreCalculus, Spanish I, and Bible. This doesn’t seem extraordinarily heavy to me, and in fact, is a little light. (We need another elective here). Since we live in Texas, state requirements aren’t an issue, but we are definitely college prep.

For those of you who do/did homeschool high school, how many hours per day did it usually take for a child of average (or above) intelligence with no learning disabilities?
